Kapili Fault

Kapili Fault

  • It is a 300 km long and 50 km wide lineament situated in the northeastern region (NER).

  • It extends from the western part of Manipur to the tri-junction of Bhutan, Arunachal Pradesh, and Assam.

  • It is closer to Himalayan Frontal Thrust.

  • This is a seismically active area falling in the highest Seismic Hazard Zone V.

  • It is associated with collisional tectonics because of the Indian Plate subducting beneath the Eurasian Plate.

  • Impact on Assam:

    • Displacement: Earthquakes and land shifts can lead to displacement of people, especially in low-lying areas near fault zones.

    • Infrastructure Damage: The region's roads, bridges, and buildings are vulnerable to destruction due to seismic activity.

    • Flooding: The Kapili Fault's movement has the potential to disrupt the course of rivers like Kapili and Brahmaputra, increasing the likelihood of flooding in Assam, exacerbating the state's existing flood problems.

    • Agriculture: The shifting of land can affect agricultural practices, especially in the floodplain areas, leading to loss of crops and livelihoods.
