World Patient Safety Day
World Patient Safety Day
World Patient safety day observed annually on 17th September 2025 annually.
World Patient Safety Day:
World Patient Safety Day was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) during the 72nd World Health Assembly in May 2019.
This resolution was unanimously passed by 194 countries. The main reason for celebrating this day is that every year millions of people suffer harm due to unsafe healthcare, and many even lose their lives.
Objectives:
To educate patients and their families about the risks of healthcare.
To create a culture in health systems where safety is given top priority.
To encourage governments and health organizations to formulate effective policies related to patient safety.
To strengthen collaboration between health workers, administrators, and patients.
India’s Initiatives
National Patient Safety Implementation Framework (NPSIF) 2018–2025 – Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
Focuses on: safety culture, safe practices, training, reporting, and learning systems.
LaQshya Program – improving quality of maternal and newborn care.
Kayakalp Scheme – promoting cleanliness, hygiene, and infection control in healthcare facilities.
National Digital Health Mission (NDHM) – ensuring better record-keeping & reducing medical errors.
National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH) – sets safety & quality standards.
Ethical Concerns in Patient Safety
Autonomy – Patients’ right to informed consent violated by errors/miscommunication.
Beneficence & Non-maleficence – Unsafe practices (e.g., wrong surgery, fake drugs) breach “do good, do no harm.”
Justice – Poor/rural patients face higher safety risks → ethical inequity.
Transparency – Non-disclosure of errors undermines trust; duty to report.
Commercialization – Profit-driven care (unnecessary tests) compromises safety.
Technology – AI, e-health improve safety but raise privacy & accountability issues.
Example- New born baby death at GMCH in SNCU
